Being an entrepreneur is super fun. Firstly, there is no need to answer to that dreaded ‘boss’ figure who constantly harangues. There is no threat of getting benched during the recession. You are more self-reliable, passionate and driven while venturing out into a prospective business. There are cons to this proposition as well. Procrastination comes forth as one of the biggest hurdles in course of this beautiful journey.
Call it laziness, lethargy or whatever, entrepreneurs tend to procrastinate very often at the onset of the business. There is no shaking away from going through this phase.
Below are some of the ways how new age entrepreneurs go on a procrastination spree while commencing the first phase of their start up. It would be useful to know what they are in order to act on the same.
“Mine is a Start Up. Let me take some time”
Most entrepreneurs mentally attune themselves that time will factor majorly in settling down the operations and sales. While the operations can be ongoing, attracting sales other than word of mouth and referrals is a super tedious process. Establishing a business means phase wise execution, but it does not mean that the masters of ideas rest their energies in the process. Be energetic. Get up and go make some calls. Yes, it is a start-up and it will take time. However, there is no need to make that a regular habit and delay things.
“Networking is super boring. I will go some other day”
Some of us like the whole she bang of Investor Meets and high teas, while the rest like to play a little subtle. Whether big or small, networking is an important component that propels your business. Most beginners tend to take this fact rather easy. This is not a healthy sign at all. What you practice at the onset of your business tends to largely become the DNA of your establishment later on. Networking is rather important. You can’t say time out to this.
“Think I have made some notes. Will refer later”
During the first client meeting or a call, we tend to go all high on adrenaline, taking notes for every single point. Fast forward a little, and most of us don’t even bother to refer back to the notes while in action. Taking notes is very important, but going back and reading through is equally critical. You never know if there were major aspects in between the lines that were not paid attention to.
“Some guy called asking for services. Too busy now to call back”
The beginners are often neck deep in momentum with current deliveries. There is every chance that making a call back to another inquiry takes a back seat. This is not a welcome sign. Believe it or not, the other players talk about your work as the progress happens. Make sure to return calls on time and understand who is approaching you for what. You never know if a windfall project was on cards and you had unknowingly botched it.
“I’m way too far away to apply what big boys follow”
Your business could be small, but make sure your mind set is expanded with a vision for the future. That happens when you follow the success stories and learn lessons from those who have already treaded the path. It is never too early or distant to emulate a global business into your small shop of operations. You can apply the same principles that are being followed at Apple Inc. or Microsoft. Be motivated and have the gut to stretch beyond in your limited means and space.
These are some of the common ways of procrastination made by the aspiring entrepreneurs in the beginning. Remember, if you get the inception right, everything else falls into place, just like that.
